MBBS in China: what it really costs

A full cost breakdown for the September 2026 intake — tuition, hostel, the fees people forget, and what to budget for living.

Working out study costs

Most fee posters show tuition and stop there. This is the whole picture, so you can budget properly rather than be surprised in your second month.

What the university charges

Across the universities we work with, an MBBS year including hostel generally falls between ¥24,000 and ¥33,000.

Some real examples for the September 2026 intake:

  • Yichun University — ¥26,500 in the first year, ¥24,700 from the second year onwards
  • Gannan Medical University — ¥27,000 per year for tuition and hostel
  • Jianghan University — ¥32,300 in the first year, ¥21,400 in the second
  • Shanxi Medical University — ¥28,000 tuition plus ¥5,000 hostel from year two

The first year is often higher than later years, because registration, admission and management fees are charged once.

The fees people forget

  • Application fee — around ¥600 to ¥800, paid separately and not refundable
  • Medical check on arrival — around ¥400
  • Insurance — around ¥800 per year, and it is compulsory
  • Visa extension or residence permit — around ¥400 per year
  • Electricity and water in the hostel, which are usually billed to students

What to budget for living

Food and personal spending are not in any of the figures above. Students generally report ¥1,500 to ¥2,500 a month depending on the city and how often they eat out. Smaller cities like Yichun and Ganzhou are cheaper than Wuhan or Beijing.

Scholarships change the picture

Provincial, university and performance scholarships can take a serious amount off these numbers, and some nursing and bachelor places are fully funded. Average marks do not rule you out.

One thing to be clear about: fees are set by the university and can change between intakes. Every figure on this site carries the date it was checked. Always confirm the current amount with us in writing before you pay anything.

Send us your marks and your budget and we will tell you which universities are realistic for you, including the total for year one.

Still not sure how this applies to you?

Every university sets its own rules and they change between intakes. Send us your situation and we will give you the specific answer, not the general one.
